HILTON CARTER'S LOFTY GREEN IDEA
"FILLED WITH LIFE & DRAPED IN LIGHT."
Known by many as ‘the plant guy’, interior stylist Hilton Carter has created a space in Charm City that has been designed ‘with a special sense of Zen, balance, and artistry’. This loft-style rental, appropriately named Jungle By The Falls, can easily be seen as an extension of Carter himself. The man and his work have attracted an Instagram following of over 70,000 keen-eyed design lovers and intent-based creatives whose mission embraces a home-grown environment. Literally.
Jungle By The Falls is a space that immediately feels familiar, not because we’ve experienced it, but because we’ve imagined ourselves there. The warmth and kindness Hilton has infused into its intimate ambiance makes us feel alive. Each piece of art was chosen with purpose and the textures have all been curated—every square foot of the apartment has had his attention.
So how does one marry a love for plants with a skill for design, and sell it as a viable, sustainable business model? The idea for Jungle By The Falls grew from the consistent flow of requests he received from friends and complete strangers on social media. Some sought access to his own home for a photoshoot, while others inquired if they could simply come over and take a nap, read, or be inspired. Although the idea of sharing his space with good company sounded charming, a more suitable option outside of his own personal space was explored.
Essentially Carter’s "second home," Jungle By The Falls is a 1,000 square foot sun kissed apartment in the Whitehall Mill property (formerly an old cotton mill), along the Jones Falls Expressway in Hampden, Maryland. The process of designing this harmonious green space took months—curating plants, cultivating the perfect accent pieces, collecting classic prints of books, and selecting finishes that would reflect light or soak it in. Sourcing fabrics that not only demand attention but suggest touch was another key element in the design of this oasis.
Since the doors opened in November of 2017, friends and clients have used the space as a backdrop for photo shoots, parties, and some have even allowed Jungle By The Falls to play a role on their wedding day. Hilton Carter’s social media following continues to explode. The care in styling this space, in order for Carter to deem it worthy of his community’s respect, was front and center. There’s most certainly a sense of purpose here.
"Filled with life and draped in light." We couldn’t agree more, Hilton. Beautiful.
